THE most famous person to escape death at Culloden was undoubtedly Bonnie Prince Charlie himself. But it is not widely known that the prince, still in his twenties, made a secret visit to London in 1750 to stimulate another rising in England, which later became known as the Elibank plot, during which, it is believed, he converted to the Church of England. After the victory at the Battle of Prestonpans, Charles and his army attempted to continue to London. Government troops were not far behind, and a bloody battle was fast approaching. As it continues to fuel the imagination through film and television, the Jacobite cause may have been lost, but it has not been forgotten.
