On July 14, 2004, ONeal was traded to the Miami Heat for Caron Butler, Lamar Odom, Brian Grant, and a future first-round draft choice (the Lakers used the draft choice to select Jordan Farmar in the 2006 draft). ONeal left the school as the schools fourth all-time leading scorer and second in rebounds. He helped lead the team to an NIT championship in 1991, and a second-place finish in the NCAA Tournament in 1992.
